PANEL 1
A city that has been devastated by a great battle. A man lays on the ground, his leg is caught under fallen debris. He is looking up in at the amazement at the figure before him. ARMOUR, sheild power fully on is blocking an intense blast of energy that colours the entire scene red. A look of pain is on her face, her mouth open as if shouting.

CAPTION 1 (Top Left of Panel, yellow pad paper style, the handwriting of a journalist. This is same for all the captions): I can't hear what she says over the roar of the death that is emitting from that things eyes...

CAPTION 2: I am not even sure that what she is saying is English...

PANEL 2

Close in ARMOUR's face. Her pain looked turned to determination.

CAPTION: But I see something in her face.

PANEL 3

Same shot as PANEL 2 but she has a slight smile on her face.

CAPTION 1: A smirk.

CAPTION 2: A confidence.

CAPTION 3: A reassurance.

PANEL 4

Back to the man on the floor. His face looking straight at us. Despite his circumstances he is smiling.

CAPTION 1: She has this.

CAPTION 2: We're safe.

ALWAYS WATCHING

This was a one page strip me and artist Fred O'Rourke (Find him on twitter @Fred_ORourke and check out his website here http://freddoescomics.blogspot.com) did for OFFLIFE Magazine http://www.offlife.co.uk/

We unfortunately didn't get selected but it was a fun little piece. I love the detail and style Fred uses for his characters.

Enjoy!

Coming in from an open window we see CHRIS D'AMICO aka RED MIST sitting down, his back to us as he reads from the computer screen in front of him.

RED MIST: A world full of superheroes, eh?

PANEL 2

He turns around to face us, showing his revamped RED MIST costume, his face is uncovered.

CHRIS D'AMICO: As a great man once said...

PANEL 3

He puts on a new more scarier mask.

CHRIS D'AMICO: As a great man once said... wait 'til they get a load of me.

PANEL 4

We pull back into the room and to the right CHRIS D'AMICO is flying of his chair, closely followed by his computer. Blood and circuitry all around him, his face in shock from the force of the shotgun blast. To the left stands FRANK DARBO aka THE CRIMSON BOLT, full costume, gun in hand, yelling at the top of his voice...

PANEL 1

Inside a forest where winter snow has fallen, smoke is rising from an unseen disaster behind the thicket of trees. Flames have sprung around the foliage and scraps of metal can be seen on the floor. Emerging from the smoke is RUDOLPH, limping with one eye closed, scars across his body.

CAPTION 1- Over Germany the attack causes an old man and his sleigh to crash into the woods below...

PANEL 2

Further out from the forest and into a clear field blanketed with snow, RUDOLPH is swaying as if about to fall.

CAPTION 1- Only one walks away...

CAPTION 2- But even a legend that once burned so bright...

PANEL 3

Bird’s eye view on RUDOLPH now lying in the snow, dead. The panel is pure white except for the hoof prints RUDOLPH caused and a trickle of blood that accompanies them.

CAPTION 1- Now no longer glows...

PANEL 1

Inside an ape’s bedroom. All that can be seen is the end of a bed, with human feet on top of it, ankles roped to the bed posts. The feet aren’t struggling. In the background we can see an archway where THE APE, nothing on but a primitive towel around his waist downwards, is standing in front of a mirror (NOTE: No reflection can be seen). In his left hand is a bloody razor held up.

THE APE- Now was that so bad?

PANEL 2

Zooming into the image in PANEL 1, with more of a focus on the archway leading to THE APE. The razor has been put down to the side. The reflection in the mirror still can’t be seen.

THE APE- There was no reason to be afraid. After all...

PANEL 3

Viewpoint from the mirror. We are looking directly at THE APE’s face as he stares outwards at the reader. He grins widely, as he wears a human face that has been freshly cut off. Smudges of red can be seen underneath the mask and wet blood seeps from the edges

THE APE -... I just want to be like you.

Outside, in a rocky quarry, a TEAM ROCKET MEMBER is shouting instructions to his GOLBAT, which is head butting a CHARMANDER, that is clearly bruised, the impact knocking it out towards the reader.

TEAM ROCKET MEMBER – FINISH HIM!

PANEL 2

The CHARMANDER lays curled up on the floor. Its eyes closed and the flame on its tail dying out. The shadow of the TEAM ROCKET MEMBER looms over it.

TEAM ROCKET MEMBER- Tut. And I thought these things were meant to be tough

PANEL 3

The TEAM ROCKET MEMBER, hands on hips and looking proud, has one foot raised on a rock that is on the floor. Unknown to him the rock has an eye that is open and looking up at him.

TEAM ROCKET MEMBER- I wonder what would happen if my GOLBAT just kept sucking the life out of you. Would it become stronger?

PANEL 4

The TEAM ROCKET MEMBER is flung backwards as the rock shoots up, revealing itself to be a GEODUDE. Two more have risen from the rocky floor and are ready to attack the TEAM ROCKET MEMBER. Another GEODUDE has already pinned down the GOLBAT, and another one is in front of the unconscious CHARMANDER, waiting to defend.

TEAM ROCKET MEMBER- Wha-!?

GEODUDE #1 – DUDE!

GEODUDE #2 – DUDE!

GEODUDE #3 – DUDE!

GEODUDE #4 – DUDE!

GEODUDE #5 – DUDE!

CAPTION 1- My name is Wally West...

CAPTION 2- I USED to be the fastest man alive...

PANEL 2
Same shot as before but the view is now from a window.

CAPTION- Now I am the slowest...

PANEL 3
Further back into the room, window in the background. It's a hospital room and we can see WALLY WEST laying in a bed, hooked up to a series of life preserving machines. A figure can be seen silhouetted next to the window.

CAPTION- It takes me an hour just to blink...

PANEL 4
Close up on WALLY'S face, frozen with a blank face. Mask over his face.

CAPTION 1- Please... Somebody...

PANEL 1

Night time, we are over looking a bridge that is high over a rushing river. Standing on it's edge looking down is a MAN in a ragged suit, a bottle of vodka in his right hand.

CAPTION- Poinephobia; the abnormal fear of punishment.

PANEL 2

Close up of the MAN'S face, unshaven and drunk, tears filling his eyes. On his cheeks are scratch marks, fresh with wet blood.

CAPTION- Suffers can not stand the thought of the terrible consequences their actions can incur.

PANEL 3

The MAN jumps. Everything becomes a blur as the wind rushes past him, his clothes flapping about. The only things that are clear are himself and a patch of river water waiting to greet him.

CAPTION- Some will go to any lengths to avoid them.

PANEL 4

We are at the river level looking down stream. A full white moon seems to take up most of the night sky. The MAN'S GHOST rises from the water. A spectral form, same as he died, but now relieved and happy. He doesn't notice however THE SPECTRE, standing behind him, his cape raised in his hands like a bird of prey, his face without compassion.

CAPTION- After all, who can punish the dead?

ADRIAN VEIDT now old, his golden hair given way to a light silver, his once handsome face wrinkled with age, stands in his ANTARCTIC COMPLEX viewing a wall of monitors that light up on otherwise dark room. He is dressed in a purple gown and slippers, as if ready for bed. His arms crossed and a look of concern on his face.

CAPTION 1
(Located at top left of the page. The box is coloured brown with a bronze edging)
- After all these years Adrian, how do you sleep at night?

CAPTION 2
(BOTTOM RIGHT OF PANEL, COLOURED PURPLE)
- Not very well, Daniel.

PANEL 2

Close up on ADRIAN'S eyes, you can see the TV screens reflected in them, they are generally showing good news and promoting peace. However there is a look of anxiety in ADRIAN'S eyes, as if he's waiting for the entire thing to go wrong.

CAPTION 1
(Top RIGHT OF PANEL, COLOURED PURPLE)
- Not well at all.

My Entry

Moi?
"Cela n'a pas de sens vraiment n'est-ce pas?" the Raptor said, its voice raspy yet very articulated. Jenny just froze. The funny thing about panicking, is that you head doesn't exactly work like you would expect it to. In her flurried mind, she wasn't at first thinking, what the hell is a dinosaur doing in the middle of Centre Parcs or why the thing could even talk. She even momentarily forgot her worrying over the fact that she had been lost for days in the wilderness of the forests here, not being able to find her way back onto the path that she had strayed from, surviving only on rather large bottles of Mountain Dew and multi packets of Lion Bars that she had bought from her local pound shop. No. What Jenny thought first and foremost was; Damn it, I don't know any French!

PANEL 1

A winters night in GOTHAM CITY and there has been a heavy snow, JASON BLOOD, wrapped with in a trench coat and scarf, walks down an empty ally way alone, not even his shadow to keep him company, he leaves footprints as he goes.

CAPTION- Many have asked what occurs,
when one is here and the other defers.

PANEL 2

CUT TO- HELL, inside a red stone chamber where ETRIGAN is sitting on a throne of charred bone with a chalice in hand. The DEMONS THREE crouch around staring at the flames that are at the forefront of the panel and watching the horror that is occurring off panel. ETRIGAN is also watching and he is smiling.

CAPTION- The Demon himself goes to the land of rot,
where tortured souls burn with flame that is hot,
and the demon smiles at the damned and the lost,
wishing he never be uprooted from his spot.

PANEL 3

CUT TO- HEAVEN, outside the pearly gates which lead to the SILVER CITY. JASON BLOOD stands there in a white suit, awaiting entry along with a few others dressed the same. Despite being denied entry, they all seem content just to bask in the presence of the kingdom before them.

CAPTION- I myself go to the heavens for awhile,
feeling the warmth of the Silver City which the Demon reviles.
I pray to the Lord each time to let me stay,
but He shows no mercy to those who stray.

PANEL 4

CUT TO- JASON BLOOD and ETRIGAN are stood in the centre as one being, half way through a transformation into either one or the other. The faces of their greatest enemies surround them in the void; KLARION THE WITCH BOY, MORGAINE LE FEY, NERON and FELIX FAUST.

CAPTION- So the Demon and I,
our joy subsides,
as we are both called back to the world from time to time,
to fight evil forces and prevent their horrible crimes.

PANEL 5

CUT TO- A top of castle battlements, JASON BLOOD is wearing ETRIGAN'S Armour, a flaming sword in both hands raised above his head ready to strike down atop of ETRIGAN, who is naked and crouched like a feral animal, his claws ready to slash across JASON BLOOD'S face, fire spitting out from his mouth. It is their final battle.

CAPTION- We both know that one day it will all end in tears,
our conflict finally ending after years and years,
but I would like to think it's a day that we both do fear.

PANEL 6

CUT TO- JASON BLOOD, walking further still in the same ally that was in PANEL 1, but now you can see his shadow behind him in the shape of ETRIGAN.

CAPTION- There is one thing we agree on though,
that when all is said and all is told,
that only on Earth are we ever cold.
